Whale Shark

Rhincodon typus

About the species

Whale sharks have approximately 3,000 tiny teeth that serve no function

The Whale Shark is the largest fish in the ocean, reaching lengths of up to 12 meters or more. Despite their enormous size, these gentle giants are filter feeders that pose no threat to humans. The Maldives is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks can be seen year-round, particularly in South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area. These magnificent creatures are easily identified by their distinctive checkerboard pattern of pale yellow spots and stripes on a dark background. Whale sharks feed on plankton, small fish, and fish eggs, filtering water through their massive mouths.
